Building an

AI Culture

It’s imperative to focus on the human side of AI—

without it, organizations will not reap the rewards

of their AI investments.

What will eventually determine
AI usage in organizations
isn’t technology—

It's people.

People determine how

AI gets used.

Culture determines how smart

they'll be about it.

In past technology revolutions, the most profound change didn’t reside in the technology itself, but in the new cultural norms and behaviors that the technology brought about inside organizations.

Today, we’re experiencing a technology revolution fueled by artificial intelligence. While AI has been around for decades, the speed and scale of AI adoption is unprecedented across all sectors.

In response, organizations are defining their AI strategies and investing in AI systems.

These steps are essential, but insufficient. Putting processes and systems in place does not mean people will adopt them.

To make the most of AI, employees need to be motivated and equipped. That requires building a strong
AI culture.

Organizations that fail to build a culture fit for the AI era risk becoming as irrelevant as the companies that didn’t adopt an agile culture in the previous digital era.

How to build a strong
AI Culture?

For thirty years, we have partnered with organizations to shape their cultures, and we are now increasingly helping companies design their data and AI practices. Over the past year, we spoke to technology, data, legal, policy, and HR leaders across 25 companies and 13 industries to understand what is unique about AI culture.

Based on these conversations, we identified the following practices. They all answer the same question: How can organizations build cultures that mobilize people to make the most of AI?
